Am Dienstagnachmittag nahmen wir an einer kleinen Stadtführung teil, welche durch die Schule organisiert wurde. Eine unser Lehrerinnen führte uns zu den verschieden Plätzen in Cartagena. Der gut 90minüte Rundgang war sehr interessant und wir lernten einiges über die Stadt. Einmal in der Woche findet in der Schule über den Mittag eine Kochklasse statt, diese ist zwar nicht obligatorisch aber es gehört einfach dazu. Diese war dies am Mittwoch der Fall. Wir kochten zusammen ein typisches kolumbiansches Gericht aus, natürlich frittiertem, Mais - genannt Buñuelo de Maiz. Es war sehr lecker. Am Donnerstag hatten wir nur bis 10.00 Uhr Schule. Nach der obligaten 15-minütigen Pause machten wir mit der ganzen Schule einen Ausflug an den Markt in Cartagena. Dieser findet jeden Tag statt und hat mittlerweile um die 35'000 Verkäufer. An diesem Markt kann man alles kaufen und mit alles meine ich wirklich alles. Wir begann den Rundgang im angenehmen Teil wo Kleider, Spielsachen etc verkauft wurden. Weiter ging es Richtung Gemüse, dieses sah zwar einigermassen frisch aus, lag es jedoch schon den ganzen Morgen in der Hitze und alles Fliegen und anderen Insekten hatten ihren Spass daran. Richtig schlimm wurde es dann in der Fleischabteilung. Hier konnte man jedes einzelne Stück eines Tieres (inkl. Innereien) erwerben. Das schlimmste war jedoch die fehlende Hygiene, überall liefen irgendwelche Kakerlaken und Käfer herum. Zum Glück verliessen wir diesen Ort sehr rasch wieder. Im Nachhinein muss ich sagen, es war ein Erlebnis aber nie mehr wieder Danke. Am Freitag war dann wieder normal Schule und am Nachmittag nahmen wir an einer Führung zum Castillo de San Felipe teil. Die Festung wurde unter anderem im Jahr 1741 gebraucht um den Angriff der Briten abzuwehren. Auch dieser Rundgang war wieder sehr interessant.
Für am Samstag buchten wir einen Ausflug zum Playa Blanca auf der Halbinsel Barú. Die Anreise erfolgte mehr oder weniger ohne Probleme in einem Kleinbus. Am Strand angekommen erhielten wir einen 'Aufpasser' - was wir im Nachhinein feststellen mussten, eine neue Masche ist. Am Anfang teilte er uns einen Sonnenschirm mit drei Stühlen zu, natürlich nicht ganz gratis. Wir bezahlten 50'000 Pesos (knapp 16.-), was okey ist für den ganzen Tag. Weiter brachte er uns das Mittagessen und versorgte uns mit Getränken, wenn wir danach fragten. Uns war bewusst, dass dieser Service nicht gratis ist, aber als er uns am Schluss 100'000 Pesos dafür verrechnte, waren wir schon etwas verärgert. Schlussendlich waren wir aber selber schuld. Der Strand an sich war wunderschön und das Wasser klar und angenehm warm. Es hatte einfach zu viele Leute und abgesperrte Bereiche im Meer für Jetskis und Boote kennen sie nicht. So musste man immer aufpassen, nicht überfahren zu werden. Am Strand selber hatte es wie in der Stadt etliche Verkäufer welche dich die ganze Zeit anquatschen. Alles in allem war es ein schöner Tag am Strand.
Am Sonntag legten wir dann einen Ruhetag ein. Nach dem enttäuschenden Spielausgang von Roger Federer gingen wir nur noch am Abend zusammen mit Carole, einer Klassenkameradin, etwas trinken.
Am Montagmorgen war wieder normal Schule angesagt und am Nachmittag wieder eine Stadtführung, diesmal mit dem Thema, wie die Strassennamen entstanden ist. Leider fiel dann dieser Ausflug sprichwörtlich ins Wasser. Kurz nach dem Mittag wurde es immer dunkler und nach 14.00 Uhr ging es dann richtig los. So ein Gewitter habe ich noch selten erlebt. In unserer Wohnung hielten irgendwann die Fenster nicht mehr dicht und im Bad kam das Wasser durch den Lüftungsschacht. Schlimmer hatte es die Schule und die meisten Gebäude im Centro Historico erwischt, welche mehr als Knöcheltief unter Wasser standen, wie im kurzen Video zu sehen ist. Nach gut einer Stunde war der Spuk wieder vorbei und das aufräumen begann. Am Abend schliesslich fiel gegen 19.00 Uhr noch der Strom aus, praktisch im gesamten Stadtteil. Dieser war knapp eine Stunde später auch wieder hergestellt. Es läuft einiges in dieser Stadt, Cartagena de Indias..

On Tuesday afternoon we joind a tour around the city which was organised by the school and one of our teachers led us to all of the different «Plazas» in Cartagena. The 90 min tour was very interessting and we learned a lot about Cartagena and ist history. Also once a week there is a cooking class – it is not mandatory but it still belongs to the learning process – and this week it was on Wednesday. Together we cooked a typical colombian speciality – ofc fried – Buñuelo de Maíz. It was quite delicious.
On Thursday we only had class until 10:00am and after our 15min break we left for an excursion to the local market. The marked takes place every day and has now-a-days around 35'000 vendors. At the marked you can purchase anything you can think of and when I say anything I really mean it. It started all nice where they sold clothes, toys and stuff and further back to sold some veggies which still looked good besides the heat (remember – 34 degrees Celsius plus and humidity) although some flies and other insects already had their pleasure with it. It got really bad once we entered the meat section – here you could buy every single part of an animal you can think of (incl. Innards) and the worst was the NON EXISTING hygiene… there were cockroaches and other insects everywhere and we were lucky to leave this section right away again. Well, it was an experience no question but not again… Thanks. On Friday we had class normally and in the afternoon we joined a tour to the Castillo de San Felipe. This fortress was used (amongst other reasons) for the defense of the city against the Brits in 1741 – the whole tour was very interesting and again with a lot of history.
On Saturday we went to Playa Blanca on the «peninsula» of Barú and the journey to the beach passed more or less without any issues. After the arrival at the beach we got a so called «invigilator» and we had to notice later that this is the new trick. We got a parasol – ofc not for free – we paid 50'000 pesos (around CHF 16) which is okay for a day for us but here it is expensive. Furthermore he served us our drinks if we ordered and also he served us lunch and for this «service» he charged us with 100'000 Pesos (fort he 3 of us) and this kind of pissed us off. But – it was our own fault in the end. The beach was very nice but it was too crowded and closed sections for boats and jetskis are not know here meaning you have to be really carefull once you are in the water. And on the beach itself there are a lot of vendors whcih try to sell you stuff but in total it was a very nice day.
Sunday was a quet day for us. And after we had to whitness how Roger Federer lost the Finals in Wimbeldon we only had the energy to get some food and later in the evening some drinks with Carole, one of our classmates.
On Monday morning we had class normally and another tour around the city in the afteroon with the idea to learn how the streets got their names. Unfortunately we had to cancel this tour because it fell in the wather (literarely). Shortly after lunch the sky became darker and darker and after 2pm it started… I have experienced such a storm only randomly so far. At some point the windows could not keep the water out anylonger and the wather started to enter as well through the bathroom ventilation. Well – it was worse for the school (which is just downstairs) and for the old-town «Centro Historico) which was covered in wather up until the ankles – to be seen in the video. After about an hour it was over and the cleanup began.. so far so good and around 19:00 our district also had a power failure. After an hour this got fixed again and all was back to normal. A lot of things are going on here in the City of Cartagena de Indias.
