An unserem ersten Tag in Quito haben wir uns wiedereinmal für eine Free Walkingtour eingetragen. Mehr oder weniger pünktlich ging die Tour mit gut 20 Personen los. Diese führte zuerst durch den lokalen Markt (wie immer mit grosser toller Vielfalt und sehr günstig) und danach richtung Altstadt. Unsere einheimische Führerin erzählte uns viele spannende Dinge über die Stadt. Direkt im Anschluss an die 3h Stadtführung hatten wir einen Ausflug zum Mittelpunkt der Erde gebucht. Für $10 pro Person wurden wir in 40 Minuten dahin gefahren. Am Punkt, den Einheimische vor x-Jahren ohne genaue Messgeräte berechneten, steht ein grosses Monument, welches man gegen eine Gebühr von $5 aus der Nähe betrachten kann. Unsere Tour führte aber zuerst an diesem vorbei in ein kleines, unscheinbares Museum knapp 100m daneben. Dort hat das Militär vor ein paar wenigen Jahren mit modernen Messgeräten den wirklichen Mittelpunkt berechnet. Nach einem Rundgang standen wir beim Mittelpunkt und machten einige Fotos. Es folgten ein paar sehr interessante Demonstrationen um zu beweisen, dass wir wirklich auf der 0-Linie sind. Eine davon war, mit geschlossenen Augen auf der Linie laufen – keine Chance, es zieht dich entweder nach Süden oder Norden. (Siehe Video) Man kann sich gar nicht richtig vorstellen, dass ein paar Zentimeter so eine Auswirkung haben können. Nach diesen Eindrücken waren wir richtig erschöpft und zurück in Quito gingen wir bald ins Bett. Am zweiten Tag in der zweithöchsten Hauptstadt der Welt (auf Platz 1 liegt La Paz in Bolivien) nahmen wir es gemütlich und besichtigten die zwei bekanntesten Kirchen. Zum einen die Iglesia de la Compañia de Jesus, in dieser war alles aus Gold, sehr eindrücklich, nur etwas protzig. Leider war es nicht gestattet Fotos zu machen. Die zweite war die Basílica, welche uns um einiges besser gefiel. Wir bestiegen einen der Türme und hatten eine grandiose Aussicht über die Stadt. Danach liefen wir zurück und nach einem Besuch beim Coiffeur (neuer Haarschnitt für $4) kehrten wir zurück ins Hostel um unser Gepäck für die Reise auf die Galapagos vorzubereiten.

On our first day in Quito we once more signed up for a free walking tour. More or less on time, the tour started with around 20 people. It fist lead tp the local market (as usual with a lot of variety and very cheap) and then to the old town. Our local guide would share a lot of interesting things about the city. Directly after the 3h city tour we booked a tour to the mittle of the world. For 10 dollar a person we got a ride there. On the point where the indigeneous messured the mittle of the world lots of years ago there is now a monument which one can visit now for 5 dollars a person. But our tour led us past this to a small museum which is around 100 meters next to this monument. There the military messured the real middle of the world a couple of years back with modern instruments. After a short tour around the museum we came to the middle and took some photos followed by some very intersting demonstrations which would proof that this really was the middle of the world ;) One of it was to walk on the line with closed eyes - no chance because you either head north or south - - - > video. One cannot imagine that a few centimeters have such a huge impact. After those impressions we were eshausted and back in quito we went to bed really soon. On the second day in the 2nd highest capital city in the world (number 1 is La Paz in Bolivia) we took it slow and visited the two most known churches in the city. For the one the Iglesia de la compaña de jesus in which everything was covered in gold - impressive but showy and unfortunstely fotos are not allowed. Second was the Basílica which we liked much better where we climed one of the towers and had a great view above the city. Then we walked back and after s haircut for 4$ we went back to the hostel to pack our bags for the Galapagos.
