Arequipa gefiel uns ganz gut und so vergingen die beiden Tage wie im Flug. Wir machten nichts spezielles, sondern liefen einfach umher und genossen das sonnige und warme Wetter. Einzig am Mittwoch besuchten wir das riesige Kloster. Noch bis ins Jahr 1970 war das 20’000m2 grosse Kloster komplett abgesperrt für die Öffentlichkeit, erst ab dann wurde es für Besucher geöffnet. Noch leben aber gut 20 Nonnen in einem Seitenflügel der für Besucher gesperrt ist. Am auffälligsten sind sicher die Farben, alle Wände sind in knalligen Farben gestrichen. Sonst konnte man einfach bestaunen, wie einfach die Nonnen früher gelebt haben. Für den hohen Eintrittspreis wird aber etwas wenig geboten.
Am Abend zurück im Hostel packten wir wieder unsere Rucksäcke und legten uns hin. Am Donnerstagmorgen nahmen wir wieder den PeruHop Bus (morgens um 06.00 Uhr…), zum Glück war der Abfahrorts gleich vor unseren Hostel. 😊 Der erste Stop war an einer kleinen Lagune, welche eine hübsche Aussicht bot, und der zweite Halt war für das Mittagessen. Sonst fuhren wir durch und so erreichten wir am Abend um 18.30 Uhr den weltbekannten, Touristenort Cusco. Von hier starten alle Touren, zum Beispiel zum Regenbogen Berg oder hoch zum Macchu Picchu. Völlig erschöpft von einem Tag Busfahren, checkten wir in unser Hostel ein und gingen bald zu Bett. Am Freitag gingen wir dann los, um das Städtchen zu erkundigen und traffen uns mit zwei Mädels vom Bus zum Kaffee trinken. Eigentlich gefällt es uns ganz gut, es hat schlichtweg einfach zu viele Leute…Wir genossen wieder das sonnige Wetter und gewöhnten uns langsam an die Höhe. Cusco liegt auf 3416m.ü.M. Unser nächster Auslug war erst am Sonntag. Der hatte es dafür in sich. Wir wurden morgens um 03.00 Uhr, leider bei strömenden Regen, abgeholt und die Fahrt ging Richtung Regenbogen Berg. (Rainbow Mountain) Der Regen liess zum Glück bald nach, jedoch sollten wir die Folgen davon noch spüren… Nach 1 1/2h Fahrt legten wir eine kleine Pause für das Morgenessen ein. Frisch gestärkt ging die Fahrt nochmals eine Stunde weiter, eine steile, kurvige Strasse hoch bis wir auf gut 4600m.ü.M angekommen waren. Nun ihr könnt euch sicher denken, was der ‘Regen’ hier oben über die Nacht angestellt hat. Richtig, es war alles weiss. Es hat gut 15cm Schnee hingelegt über die Nacht. Von unserem Guide erfuhren wir, dass dies normalerweise erst im November geschieht, nun denn, Hallo lieber Klimawandel. Nichtsdestotrotz machten wir uns auf den, nun halt eher rutschigen Weg hinauf auf 5200m.ü.M. zum farbigen Berg. Wir wussten noch nicht, ob wir nur eine oder mehrere Farben sehen werden.. Nach knapp 2h konnten wir aber nur noch staunen. Der Regenbogen Berg, er hat den Namen wegen den verschiedenen Farben, war zur Hälfte von Schnee bedeckt und auf der anderen Seite konnten wir tatsächlich die Farben erkennen. Ein phantastisches Bild. Wir genossen die Aussicht bevor wir uns wieder auf den rutschigen Rückweg machten. Den Nachmittag genossen wir im Hostel und erholten uns von dem tollen Erlebnis und der Höhe.

We liked Arequipa quite a lot and due to that the two days went by super fast. We did nothing special and just walked through this beautiful city and enjoyed the warm and sunny weather. Only on Wednesday we decided to visit the huge monastery. This 20’000m2 big monastery was closed for the public until 1970 and was only then opened for visitors. Today there are still around 20 nuns living in a side wing which is closed fort he public. The colors of the walls are showy – all walls are painted in super bright colors 😉 Other than that one could see how simple the life of the nuns was back then.. but given the high entrance fee it was not much.
Back in the hostel at night we once more packed our bags and went to bed on time because on Thursday morning we took the PeruHop bus again (at 6am…). Luckily the departure was just outside of our hostel 😊 First stop was a small lagoon which offered a nice view and the second stop was lunch. Apart from that we did not have any further stops and reached around 18.30 the world-famous tourist city of Cusco. This is the starting place for all the tours to e.g. Rainbow Mountain and / or Machu Pichu. Totally exhausted we did the check-in to our Hostel and went to bed early. Friday we went to discover the city and met with two ladies we know from the bus for coffee. Actually we like it but hosts to many people… We again enjoyed the sunny weather and got used to the altitute à Cusco sits on 3'416 meters above sealevel. Our next trip was only on Sunday but this was a tough one. We got picked up at 3am with poaring rain and started our journey to Rainbow Mountain. Luckily the rain stoped soon but we were about to feel the consequences of it soon. After 1.5h we stoped from breakfast and continued for another hour on a super steep and curvey road before we reached an altitute of 4600 meters above sealevel = parking lot. Now you can guess what the rain did up here during the night – right : everything was covered in snow. The mountain got around 15cm of new snow. Our guide told us that this is normally only happening from November, well, Hello global warming / climate change. Nevertheless we started the slipery hike up to Rainbow Mountain on 5'200 meters above sealevel. We did not know at this point if we were going to see any of the colors but after about 2h we could marvel at it. The rainbow mountain, he got his name due to the colors of the earth, was half covered by snow and on the other half we could indeed see the different colors. An incredible picture. We did enjoy the view for a while before we started to climb down and went back to Cusco. We enjoyed a lazy afternoon in the hostel and recovered from this experience and the altitute.
